About the opportunity


The NSW State Emergency Service (NSW SES) is recruiting to create a talent pool of Program Support Officers who may be activated over the next 18 months to fill ongoing and temporary vacancies

The Program Support Officers work in various areas across the NSW SES, and in various locations across NSW. These team members provide project and administrative support in activities ranging from utilising the Microsoft Office suite, contribute to preparation of reports, responding to correspondence, managing team inboxes, coordinating meetings and workshops, researching and drafting documents as required, processing of invoices in our SAP system, engaging with stakeholders and assisting the team as required. 

Our current ongoing vacancies are in the below teams:

  • Capability – A part of the Operational Capability and Training Directorate, this role provides support to the broader Capability team that is responsible for the development and implementation of new and enhanced capabilities to ensure that the NSW SES is able to meet community expectations and legislative obligations. The location of this role may be Wollongong, Goulburn, Wagga, Metford, Rhodes or Bathurst.
  • Fleet – A part of the Finance Asset and Business Service Directorate this role provides support to a team responsible for delivering replacement operational vehicles, vessels and trailers for the NSW State Emergency Service (SES). This role is located in Wollongong.
  • State Operations Centre – A part of the Metro Operations Directorate, this role provides support to the Operations Centre to ensure effective operation of a 24/7 call centre environment. This role is located in Wollongong.

The NSW State Emergency Service (NSW SES) is an emergency and rescue service made up almost entirely of volunteers and supported by a small staff contingent. NSW SES is a key influencer of other emergency service agencies and works closely with these partners to modernise and grow volunteering to save lives and protect communities.

While major responsibilities are for flood, storm operations and tsunamis, the NSW SES also provides the majority of general rescue effort in the rural parts of the state. This includes road accident rescue, vertical rescue, bush search and rescue, evidence searches (both metropolitan and rural), other forms of specialist rescue that may be required due to local threats, Urban Search and Rescue and Community First Response.


About you

To be successful in this role you will:

  • Be proficient in use of the Microsoft Office suite particularly in Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint and Teams
  • Have experience in providing a broad range of administration and project support services to managers
  • Thrive in managing varying tasks and meeting deadlines
  • Have excellent communication skills both written and verbal
  • Have an aptitude for learning new systems

Have a willingness to support NSW SES during operational activity

  2. Problem solving and thinking on your feet will be daily requirements for this position.  Please provide an example of a situation where something unexpected occurred while you were managing other work tasks. Describe how you solved this issue and what were the outcomes.
