About the Role 

The Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Sexual Assault Counsellor (ASAS) will play a vital role within the Albury Wodonga Health Specialist Counselling Team. The role will be provide specialised clinical, supportive, and advocacy services to victims of sexual assault, including children, adolescents, and adults, as well as non-offending family members. This support will extend throughout assessment, counseling, and legal proceedings. The position involves working closely with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children, young people, and adults, offering trauma-informed and culturally safe counseling, as well as tailored support services. Our primary aim is to provide culturally sensitive and trauma-aware care to the Aboirginal and Torres Strait Islander community across all age groups.


The role will also influence and assist in the development of policy, practice standards & procedures, and also play an important role in contributing to education, professional development and training. The successful applicant must Maintaining high quality records in line with AWH and NSW policy guidelines.


Additionally, the position will contribute to influencing and assisting in the development of policy, practice standards and procedures, and actively participate in educational initiatives, professional development, and training. The successful candidate will be required to uphold precise record-keeping practices in compliance with the guidelines set forth by Albury Wodonga Health and the state of New South Wales.


This role is being advertised as a multi-classification and multi-level position, which is intended to provide flexibility around recruitment, career development and progression for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander staff.


Applicants for this position must be of Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander descent through parentage, identify as being Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander and being accepted in the community as such. Exemption is claimed under Section 14 of the Anti-Discrimination Act 1977 with knowledge and experience of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture.


We are actively seeking candidates who meet the following key selection criteria to apply for this opportunity!


Accepted qualifications include:

  1. Bachelor’s Degree in Social Work which provides eligibility for membership to Australian Association of Social Workers OR;
  2. Bachelor Degree in Counselling or Welfare deemed appropriate by the employer OR;
  3. Degree in Psychology, with full registration as a Psychologist with the Psychology Board of Australia, being a 3-year degree with a fourth year honours in Psychology


  • Demonstrated understanding and skills in providing culturally responsive child centred, family focussed counselling, support and case management to individuals who have experienced sexual assault and/ or other forms of interpersonal violence and their families.
  • Demonstrated experience establishing connections, engaging, and collaborating effectively with the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community. Understanding of intergenerational trauma, contextual factors contributing to violence, abuse, and neglect, as well as principles of cultural safety.
